What OpenFix is

OpenFix is a free service that connects US homeowners with local pros. We support three trades: plumbing, HVAC (heating and air), and appliance repair (refrigerators, freezers, ice makers, washers, dryers, dishwashers, ovens, stoves, cooktops, and microwaves). You use OpenFix from AI assistants like ChatGPT, Claude, and Meta Muse to describe a problem, see who would get your request, and agree before anything is shared.

We are not a contractor. We don't employ plumbers or own a truck fleet. We connect you with a local pro through our partner network, or with one company we name to you.

How it works

  1. Describe the problem and ZIP. Tell your AI assistant what you need — a burst pipe, a dead AC, a fridge that stopped cooling — and your ZIP code.
  2. OpenFix checks who covers your ZIP. Where we work with a participating company, we name it. Otherwise, if a local pro in our partner network serves your ZIP and trade, OpenFix can connect you by phone.
  3. You agree before anything is shared. Your assistant shows a short consent disclosure that says exactly who gets your request. Nothing is shared unless you agree. After you agree, you add your name and phone number so the pro can reach you. In ChatGPT and Claude you type them into the consent card, not the chat.
  4. You get connected. For a call-now request, OpenFix gives you a number to call, and our partner network connects you with a local pro who serves your ZIP. For a named company, that company calls you. We send your request only to the recipient you agreed to.

The tools

OpenFix is available as an MCP server. AI assistants that support MCP can call these tools:

detect_service
Checks for emergencies, such as a gas smell, sparks or burning, or water near electrical, and identifies the trade and urgency. Emergencies get safety guidance and stop the handoff.
search_companies
Finds who can help for a ZIP and trade: one participating company, or a local pro through our partner network for a call-now request. No contact details needed.
check_coverage
Checks whether OpenFix can connect a request for this US ZIP and trade. No contact details needed.
quote_handoff
Prepares a draft request from the trade, ZIP, and a short description of the problem, and returns the exact disclosure to show. Your name and phone number are added after you agree. Contacts no one.
get_disclosure
Returns the exact disclosure text, version, and SHA-256 hash for the call-now route or the named-company route.
submit_job
Records the homeowner's consent and sends the request, with the name and phone number they entered after agreeing, to the recipient they agreed to. For a call-now request, returns the number to call. Requires the exact disclosure version and hash.
get_status
Returns the request status, including the number to call for a call-now request. OpenFix never dispatches a crew.

Example prompt

Try this in your AI assistant:

"My AC stopped blowing cold air and I'm in 75205. Can you get me a local pro on the phone?"

Note: ZIP 75205 returns a labeled sandbox test company, and nobody is contacted. OpenFix is in testing, so other ZIPs may show no coverage yet.

Privacy and consent

We take your privacy and your phone number seriously. Nothing is shared until you agree, and then only with the recipient you agreed to: our partner network of local pros, or the one company named to you. We don't sell your information.

Safety

Emergencies: For a fire, gas leak, flooding near electrical systems, or a medical emergency, call 911 or your utility's emergency line. OpenFix is not an emergency service.

Gas smell: Leave the building and call your gas utility's emergency line from outside.
